Stating the Obvious

Posted by KindredSmile |

In these dire economic times, retailers are finding it harder and harder to entice consumers into spending their precious funds. As a result, stores are making drastic cuts, slashing both prices and employees in an effort to stay afloat. All of this turmoil begs one question:

Why is Radio Shack still in business?
He better be looking for a walkie-talkie or some watch batteries.

Now, I know on the surface it may seem like an odd question. I mean, people still have confidence in electronics, right? With the advances in technology, it would stand to reason that the market can stand a little uncertainty every now and then. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Let's put this in perspective, shall we? As of January 25th, 2009, the following stores reported closings:

Mervyn’s
JcPenney
DKNY (175 stores)
Filene’s Basement
Ann Taylor (117 stores)
Gap Inc (85)
Foot Locker (140)
Dillard’s (26)
Sigrid Olsen (54)
Pacific Sunwear (153 demo stores)
Macy’s (11)
Fashion Bug (150)
Cache (23)
That list doesn't include the HD-Satellite-GPS-enabled elephant in the room: the fact the Circuit City is going out of business. I mean, at least Circuit City sold stuff I'd heard of. You know what I think of when I hear the words "Radio" and "Shack"? Shat like this:

And that says nothing of the atmosphere. The poor employees are paid off of commission, so no matter what you go in there for, they will try to sell you a cell phone or a television. The prices aren't competitive, and their inventory is dismal. What say you, readers? Am I right or am I right? Can you think of any other businesses that reek of fail and just need to die?

I really can't think of any. Radio Shack is THEEEE worst! Ugh. The very thought of the place is too much to bear. It's a technological graveyard.

It doesn't matter though. The behemoth that is Wal-Mart will swallow them all whole within 10yrs.

Wow that is so funny. I was thinking the same thing as I drove through South Holland, IL and saw one WITH PEOPLE IN IT! I was like why are people still going there?

In NC we still have friggin K-Mart (Walmart's homely lil' sis with scoliosis) , how did that happen?

Oh, but I think Radio Shack is a front for terrorism or an intricate drug cartel... kinda like carwashes and laundromats, but on a large scale...

Yes, someone needs to explain to me why Radio Shack continues to exist...compared to... everybody, they EPICALLY FAIL AT RETAIL.

I thank you Kindred for enlightening me as to why I get accosted by salemen whenever I go in there. They work off commission... so its NOT my Bulgari Omnia Amythyste.... **sad face**

Oh Alise... KMart is trying to change its image... around these parts it is now "Sears Essentials"
Still whack and homely, but at least TRYING to look like something. But if they were REALLY trying, why did they pick SEARS to boost their 'upscaleness'? Target (pronounced Tar-jhay) they are not, nor will they ever be in their sad, sad life...

What a great insight. Man, now you have me wanting to study their business plan. They apparently know something we don't. And LMAO at those photos. I think of stuff like that too when I think of Radio Shack.

I have not been inside a RadioShack since 1998. Seriously. The only other retailer that comes close to its irrelevance is...

wait for it...

Elder Beerman.

And sadly, yes they still do exist! *gasp!*
